The hairless-obese mouse.

چکیده

Viable mice homozygous for two recessive autosomal genes, hairless (hr) and obese (ob) were produced with an average life span of 538 +/- 34.1 days. On the average, hairless-obese mice weighed about 73 percent as much as obese mice. Since obese mice consumed approximately 73 percent as much oxygen per gram body weight per hour as hairless-obese mice at about 24 degree C, the weight averages appear to be closely inversely related to the oxygen consumption averages. The presence or absence of pelage seems to make a negligible contribution to oxygen consumption in these two types of obese mice. The hairless condition of the hr/hr genotype seems to contribute to increased oxygen consumption beyond that expected as a consequence of their lower average body weight. The average oxygen consumptions for seven female mice in each of four phenotypic groups (hairless, normal, hairless-obese, and obese) were 3.87, 3.12, 2.39, and 1.74 ml/g/hr, respectively. The two mutants appear to interact in a simple additive way and not as a mutant suppression system. On an absolute basis, the hr/hr genotype seems to have approximately 54 percent as much affect on oxygen consumption as the ob/ob genotype. Litter records at about 60 days of age for four kinds of matings did no reveal any statistically significant deviations from expected ratios.

Metabolic rate and thermal insulation in albino and hairless mice.

1. Rates of oxygen consumption of albino and hairless mice were measured in a metabolism chamber during periods of approximately 5 or 24 hr. Rectal temperature was measured before and after each period. The chamber temperatures used were 22, 30 and 32 degrees C for both albino and hairless, and in addition 34 and 36 degrees C for the hairless mice.2. The mean age and body weight of the albino m...

Karyotype of Hairless Guinea pig

Chromosomal patterns of experimental animals are useful tools for cytogenetics research and animal breeding. Chromosome investigations of the hairless guinea pig are rare, therefore, karyotype of hairless guinea pigs (twelve male and female) was studied using metaphase spreads of bone marrows and G banding techniques. The chromosomes diploid number was 2n= 64 and polymorphism of three type chro...

Glycerol monooleate/solvents systems for progesterone transdermal delivery: in vitro permeation and microscopic studies

Transdermal delivery of most drugs is precluded by the barrier characteristics of the stratum corneum (SC). Chemical penetration enhancers are capable of interacting with SC constituents, inducing a temporary reversible increase in the skin permeability. The aim of this work was to assess the influence of glycerol monooleate (GMO)/solvents systems on percutaneous absorption across hairless mous...

Identification of papillomaviral DNA sequences in hairless mouse tumours induced by ultraviolet irradiation.

Papillomas, carcinomas in situ and squamous cell carcinomas were induced using ultraviolet irradiation in the hairless mouse strain Mus musculus HRA/Skh. DNA extracted from biopsies was examined using Mastomys natalensis papillomaviral DNA as a hybridization probe at reduced stringency. Sequences homologous to the probe were detected in 16 of 24 papillomas, five of five carcinomas in situ and s...

Loss of Hairless Confers Susceptibility to UVB-Induced Tumorigenesis via Disruption of NF-kappaB Signaling

In order to model squamous cell carcinoma development in vivo, researchers have long preferred hairless mouse models such as SKH-1 mice that have traditionally been classified as 'wild-type' mice irrespective of the genetic factors underlying their hairless phenotype. The work presented here shows that mutations in the Hairless (Hr) gene not only result in the hairless phenotype of the SKH-1 an...
